There are 2 measures of excellence in VCE Dance.
Student results are obviously measured in terms of end of year marks, which are known as “study scores”. However there is also a second measure of excellence in results in VCE dance.
Each year the VCAA (The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority) hold what is known as “Top Class”. This is an opportunity for the best of the best VCE students in dance, music, drama and other Arts disciplines to showcase their work in public in a series of Top Class performances that run from March to May.
To qualify for consideration in Top Class students must get a minimum of an “A” or an “A+” for their VCE study score. Only those students are considered for selection in the Top Class performance.
An “A” or an “A+” is not a guarantee of selection, merely giving the student the opportunity to be considered, and to audition for selection.
The eventual performers selected to showcase their work are chosen from amongst these students. Each student must audition before an audition panel, which selects the best of the best to perform in Top Class.
Only a very select group of the very best students ever get to perform in Top Class, and obtaining VCE marks sufficient for consideration, and performing at audition sufficiently well to qualify for selection, is extremely difficult.
Top Acts is even more difficult to qualify for. Students are selected from the Top Class season to perform in dance, drama and music. Only 1 or 2 students from each discipline are selected each year to perform in Top Acts.
Karen’s students have achieved outstanding marks (ATAR Score) in VCE dance from 2004 to 2015. In every year there has been at least 1 of Karen’s students in the top 10% of students in the state for their VCE study score, and most years there has been at least one student who has been selected for a Top Class appearance.
In 2004 one of Karen’s students achieved a perfect VCE score (100%) and was also awarded the Premier’s s Award for Excellence in Dance.

Below is an example of Chelsea’s work, which was re choreographed for the purpose of the eisteddfod.
